Studs No.2 Flute
At Jules & Gems Atelier, we believe that acquiring an object also means becoming its steward.
Jewelry is made to be worn and enjoyed. With thoughtful handling and appropriate care, its materials, finish, and character can be preserved for years to come.
The following guidance provides general recommendations for caring for pieces acquired through the Atelier. Where a particular work is accompanied by specific care instructions, those instructions should always take precedence.
Everyday Care
Jewelry naturally encounters oils, moisture, cosmetics, and environmental residue through ordinary wear.
To help preserve your pieces:
Apply fragrances, lotions, cosmetics, and hair products before putting on jewelry.
Remove jewelry before bathing, swimming, exercising, or participating in activities that expose it to excessive moisture, perspiration, chemicals, or impact.
Avoid direct contact with household cleaners, chlorine, bleach, solvents, and other harsh chemicals.
Handle pieces carefully and avoid unnecessary pulling, bending, dropping, or pressure.
After wearing, gently wipe jewelry with a clean, soft, dry cloth before storing it.
Jewelry should generally be the last thing put on and the first thing removed.
Storage
Proper storage helps protect jewelry from scratching, tangling, moisture, and unnecessary exposure to the environment.
When not being worn:
Store pieces individually whenever possible.
Keep jewelry in its original presentation box, pouch, or another clean, dry jewelry container.
Keep chains fastened and laid carefully to reduce tangling.
Avoid allowing gemstones or harder materials to rub against softer metals or other stones.
Store jewelry away from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive heat, and humidity.
Original packaging may also provide useful protection and is worth retaining as part of the complete acquisition.
Stainless Steel
316 Stainless Steel
To preserve the finish of your piece, clean gently with a soft, dry cloth after wear. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals, chlorine, salt water, perfumes, and cleaning agents. Store separately in a dry place when not in use.
Stainless steel is valued for its durability and resistance to corrosion, making it well suited to regular wear.
For routine cleaning, gently wipe the piece with a soft cloth. When deeper cleaning is appropriate, a small amount of mild soap and lukewarm water may be used.
After cleaning:
Rinse away any soap residue.
Dry the piece thoroughly with a soft cloth.
Allow it to dry completely before returning it to storage.
Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring materials, and harsh chemicals, which may scratch or alter the surface finish.
Plated, coated, embellished, or mixed-material pieces should be treated more cautiously even when stainless steel forms part of their construction.
Gemstones
Gemstones vary considerably in hardness, porosity, stability, treatments, and sensitivity to heat, moisture, chemicals, and light.
For this reason, there is no single cleaning method appropriate for every gemstone.
As a general precaution:
Use a clean, soft cloth for routine care.
Avoid prolonged immersion unless you know that the particular stone and setting can safely tolerate it.
Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.
Protect gemstones from sudden temperature changes and unnecessary impact.
Do not assume that a stone can safely be placed in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
Some stones require considerably gentler treatment than others.
Where Jules & Gems Atelier provides care instructions for an individual Gemstone Series piece, those recommendations should take precedence over this general guide.
Artist Collaboration Pieces
Works within the Artist Collaboration (ART) collection may incorporate unconventional materials, handmade components, specialized finishes, or techniques particular to the artist.
For this reason, care requirements may differ substantially between works.
Any care instructions supplied with an Artist Collaboration piece should be considered part of the documentation accompanying the work and retained for future reference.
When uncertain, we recommend contacting the Atelier before attempting deep cleaning, polishing, repair, or restoration.
Plated & Finished Surfaces
Plating and specialized surface finishes can naturally change with wear and over time.
To extend the life of a finished surface:
Minimize exposure to water, perspiration, fragrance, cosmetics, and chemicals.
Avoid abrasive polishing products.
Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth.
Store separately to reduce scratching and friction.
Changes resulting from ordinary wear and the natural aging of a surface are not necessarily defects.
Cleaning Products
Before using any commercial jewelry cleaner, polishing compound, ultrasonic cleaner, steam cleaner, or home cleaning solution, confirm that it is appropriate for every material contained in the piece.
A cleaning method that is safe for one component may damage another.
When the composition or appropriate cleaning method is uncertain, do not experiment. Contact Jules & Gems Atelier or consult a qualified jewelry professional.
Repairs & Alterations
Jewelry may occasionally require professional maintenance or repair.
We recommend having significant repairs, stone resetting, resizing, refinishing, or structural alterations performed by an appropriately qualified professional.
For Artist Collaboration and other unique works, contacting Jules & Gems Atelier before undertaking a substantial alteration is particularly encouraged. An alteration may affect the original character, documentation, or provenance of the work.
Natural Change
Materials evolve.
Metals may develop surface marks, finishes may soften, and certain natural materials may gradually change in appearance through age and wear.
Thoughtful care can slow unnecessary deterioration, but it cannot—and need not—prevent every sign of an object's life.
We encourage collectors to distinguish between damage and the natural evidence of use, age, and material character.
